SMO Airport Diagram
SMO's shortened 3,500 ft runway violates Runway Protection Zone (RPZ) standards, placing homes and residents at risk with no margin for errors. The RPZ purpose is to protect people and property by keeping the area clear of incompatible objects and activities. See the green trapezoid areas at the ends of the runway, which are based on the type of aircraft that use the runway.

National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is an independent U.S. federal agency that investigates aviation accidents to improve safety. Prior to the SMO runway shortening in 2018, the Cessna 525A Citation was an aircraft that was pushing the limits of the 5000 ft runway. In 2013, a Cessna 525A Citation crash killed four people at SMO, illustrating the extreme risks and razor-thin margin for error associated with these operations. The aircraft was headed off the runway toward homes in Sunset Park, it veered right, struck a hangar, and exploded, preventing a catastrophe in the adjacent neighborhood. In 2017, the SMO runway was shortened from 5000 ft to 3500 ft to help reduce the risk of such accidents. The Cessna weighed only 12,500 lbs, compared to the planned JetSuiteX ATR 42-600, which weighs 41,000 lbs. Because SMO is surrounded by densely populated residential neighborhoods, only the largest margins of error should be acceptable for any potential commercial aircraft operations.
